Sólheimajökull Glacier Hike

Walk on a living glacier — crevasses, moulins, and ice older than your grandparents.

Easy+⏱ 3 h (2 h on ice)👥 Max 12📅 All year🎂 Age 8+

The short version

  • Two hours on the ice with crampons — no experience needed
  • Guide explains how the glacier moves, melts and carves the valley
  • Add pick-up from Reykjavík (+7,900 kr) or meet us at the car park

What you'll do

Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull, two and a half hours from Reykjavík, and the easiest real glacier to get onto in Iceland. We fit you with crampons and a helmet, walk fifteen minutes to the ice, and then spend two hours exploring: ridges, deep blue crevasses, meltwater channels and the strange black ash layers from Katla's eruptions.

It's suitable for pretty much anyone from age eight up. Kids love it, grandparents love it. The ice is uneven, so you'll use your legs, but there's no steep climbing.

Questions

Do I need experience?

No. If you can walk on uneven ground for two hours you're fine. The crampons do the work.

Can I combine it with something?

Yes — the 14:00 departure pairs nicely with Skógafoss and Reynisfjara on your own, or book our ice-climbing intro which runs on the same glacier.
