Hvannadalshnúkur Summit

Iceland's highest point. 2,110 m. One very long, very good day.

Hard⏱ 12–15 h👥 Max 6 per guide📅 Apr – Jul🎂 Age 16+

The short version

  • Summit Iceland's highest mountain — 2,110 m on the rim of Öræfajökull
  • Roped glacier travel with crampons and ice axe, all gear included
  • Small rope teams: max 6 climbers per certified glacier guide

What you'll do

This is the big one. Hvannadalshnúkur sits on the northern rim of the Öræfajökull volcano and is the highest point in Iceland. It isn't technical, but it is long: roughly 2,000 m of ascent and 20–25 km round trip, half of it on a crevassed glacier where we travel roped together. You'll start in the dark, reach the summit around midday with the whole south coast under you, and be back at the car in time for a very large pizza.

You need to be fit — think 'can hike 8 hours with a pack and still smile' — but you don't need any mountaineering experience. Your guide teaches crampon and rope technique on the way up, sets the pace, and turns the team around if the weather says so. That's the deal on big mountains, and we'd rather have you back next year than push it.

Questions

How fit is fit enough?

If you can hike for 8+ hours on a mountain trail with 1,000 m of ascent and feel tired-but-fine, you're good. If you're unsure, do Fimmvörðuháls with us first — it's our test piece.

What if the weather is bad?

We decide the evening before based on the mountain forecast. If we cancel, you get a full refund or a free move to another date. If we turn around mid-route, that's mountain life — no refund, but you'll understand why.

Can I rent boots?

Yes — B2/B3 boots for 2,500 kr. Book them when you book the trip so we bring your size.
