The short version

  • The Bláhnúkur & Brennisteinsalda loop — rhyolite in every colour
  • Natural hot spring at the end, right by the trail
  • Highland 4×4 transport from Reykjavík both ways

What you'll do

Landmannalaugar is the highland everyone has seen in photos — rhyolite mountains in red, yellow, green and blue, a black lava field, steam everywhere. It's three hours from Reykjavík on rough roads, which is why we drive. You hike a 10 km loop over Bláhnúkur (the blue peak, 940 m) and across the Laugahraun lava, past the sulphur vents of Brennisteinsalda, and back to the hot spring that gives the place its name.

A great first 'real' Icelandic hike — some steep bits, loose ground on the peak, but short. Bring a swimsuit; the spring is the best bath you'll have all trip.

The day, roughly

  1. 07:30 Depart Reykjavík in the 4×4
  2. 10:30 Landmannalaugar. Boots on.
  3. 10:45 Up Bláhnúkur — steep and loose, big views
  4. 12:30 Down through the lava, lunch by the vents
  5. 14:30 Hot spring, as long as you like
  6. 16:00 Drive back
  7. 19:00 Reykjavík

Questions

Can I do this with kids?

From about ten if they hike a bit. The Bláhnúkur ascent is steep; we can take the flatter lava loop instead.

Is the road scary?

It's a rough F-road with a river ford. That's why you're not renting a Yaris and doing it yourself.
